LATE HAWK RALLY STUNS DELAWARE IN OT

Newark, DE (09/27/00) - With a furious finish the St. Joseph's field hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit with less than ten minutes to play in regulation to stun Delaware, 3-2, in overtime. Sophomore Brett Dymarczyk played the hero for SJU redirecting a deflection from Kathy Sokalski into the Blue Hen cage at the 11:58 mark of the extra session. The victory, which improved SJU's record to 4-6 and dropped Delaware to 3-7, gave the Hawks their third overtime victory of the season. Since Joan Broderick took over the helm for SJU, the Hawks are a remarkable 8-3 in OT. After outplaying the Hens throughout the first half, it appeared that a win was not in the cards for SJU after Delaware tallied twice in a five minute stretch early in the second stanza. SJU, however, turned up the offensive pressure and notched two goals in under a minute to knot the contest. Freshman Kris Teklinsky tallied the first Hawk goal when she cracked home the rebound of a shot by Sokalski. Sokalski had received the ball low in the crease and tried to slam the ball home, but was denied on a brilliant stop. The freshman, with clear path on goal, buried the shot with 9:41 left in regulation. After the goal Delaware made a goalkeeper substitution. The Hawks, though, wasted little time greeting the new goalie and equalizing the contest just 44 seconds later. SJU intercepted the face-off by Delaware and a long through ball was played ahead to a wide open Dymarczyk. The sophomore settled the ball and composed herself to the left of the cage. She then beat new Hen netminder Stephanie Judefind from a nearly impossible angle, low to the short-side. Sparked by their offensive exploits, SJU controlled action the remainder of the way, but were unable to net the game-winner. Delaware was bailed out on several occasions by clutch defensive saves to deny SJU sure scoring opportuities. In the the overtime, Delaware had several early opportunities, putting several shots on Hawk goalkeeper Lauren Bradley during consecutive penalty corners. Following the corners, SJU quickly got out on the offensive with a breakout counter-attack. Schmoltze received the ball near the top of the circle and pushed the ball on goal, where both Sokalski and Dymarczyk were positioned. Sokalski then redirected the shot up and over the goaltender and into the goal. The match was one of SJU's strongest of the year. They outshot UD 14-6. Following a three-game road trip, the Hawks return home this weekend for matches with Lafayette on Friday (3:30 pm) and Fairfield on Sunday (11:00 am).
