HAWKS DEFEAT HOFSTRA IN TWO OVERTIME THRILLER, 3-2
PHILADELPHIA (9/17/00) - Sophomore Aly
Dankovitch knocked home a crossing pass
from freshman Amie Schmoltze with just 3:07
left in the second overtime to lift St. Joseph's to
a thrilling 3-2 victory over Hofstra on Finnesey
Field.
Trailing 2-0, the Pride made a furious comeback
to force the extra time, tying the game with no
time left on the clock. Hofstra was in the midst
of a penalty corner when the clock ticked down to 0:00. Following a
flurry in front of the SJU cage, a penalty stroke was awarded. Junior
Allison Barnett then evened the contest pushing the stroke past SJU
freshman goaltender Courtney Huff.
The Hawks dominated the overtime sessions, but were unable to sneak
the ball past Hofstra goalkeeper Christine Hickey until Schmoltze broke
free on an odd-man rush late in the second overtime. SJU outshot the
visitors 10-2 in OT. Particulary dangerous for SJU was sophomore
Kathy Sokalski, who used her one-on-one moves to get to the goal.
It was Sokalski's savvy stickwork in the second half that helped SJU
build a 2-0 lead. She tallied the first goal of the game at the 17:39 mark
of the second stanza. She received the ball on the right side of the
goal, beat a defender and slashed the ball into the back of the cage.
Less than two minutes later, she was at it again. In an almost carbon
copy of her earlier goal, Sokalski beat a defender on the right side.
Instead of shooting, however, she centered the ball to Brett
Dymarczyk. Dymarczyk then slapped the ball home with 16:02 left in
regulation, her third goal of the season.
Hofstra was able to narrow the deficit to 2-1 on a goal by Tricia-Ann
Greaves with 10:51 left to play. Greaves blasted home a drive off of a
Pride penalty corner.
Huff, who was making her first career start played well for SJU. She
stopped nine shots and helped to defense nine Hofstra penalty corners.
Her counterpart, Hickey made eight saves.
With the win the Hawks improved their record to 3-4 on the season,
while the Pride slipped to 3-5. The win gave the Cityliners the lead in
the all-time series 3-2. SJU is now 7-2 in overtime games under head
coach Joan Broderick.
Next up for St. Joseph's is a matchup with crosstown rival Drexel. The
contest, which will be played at Franklin Field on the campus of the
University of Pennsylvania, begins at 9:00 p.m. Current Hawk assistant
coach Aislinn Richards captained the Dragons in 1999.
