DYMARCZYK AND BRADLEY LIFT HAWKS OVER RICHMOND
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (09/16/00) - Sophomore
Brett Dymarczyk scored twice and junior
goalkeeper Lauren Bradley turned back ten
shots to lead the St. Joseph's University field
hockey team to a 2-1 win over future Atlantic 10
Conference rival Richmond. The win snapped a
three-game losing streak to the Spiders, while
providing the Hawks with their first win over UR
since 1988.
The Spiders, who controlled the action for the better portion of the
game, outshot the Cityliners 17-8. SJU, however, lingered around and
finally claimed the lead with 9:37 left to play in the game
Sophomores Kathy Sokalski and Dymarczyk teamed up on the
game-winner. After a flurry of action in front of the Richmond cage,
Sokalski found herself with the ball to the right of the goal. Using a
quick step, she manuvered around a defender and popped the ball into
the center. Dymarczyk then tapped the ball high into the back of the
net .
Richmond had several good chances to score early in the match and
took an early 1-0 lead on a penalty stroke. Lauren Rice, the Spiders
top scorer, flicked home the shot for the visitors just ten minutes into
the game.
The Spiders had a chance to increase their lead six minutes later when
they were awarded another stroke. This time co-captain Megan
Conway took the shot. Bradley, however, snuffed out the attempt,
diving to her left to turn back the shot.
The save gave the Hawks a lift and SJU responded by knotting the
contest. It was Dymarczyk, who once again put SJU on the board.
Freshman Amie Schmoltze cracked a shot on goal from the top of the
circle, which was blocked by UR netminder Brooke Fuller. Dymarczyk
then swooped in on the rebound popping it into the goal and tying the
game at one apiece.
Bradley was brilliant in the net for SJU, as Richmond peppered the goal
with big drives by Rice and Kristin Gavin. She stopped a season high
ten shots, while heling to thwart 12 Richmond corners. Her counterpart,
Fuller, successfully pushed aside four Hawk shots.
The Hawks will have little rest, as they return to the Finnesey Field turf
tomorrow for a game against Hofstra. The contest gets stared at
noon.
