PENN STATE HANDLES HAWKS IN HAPPY VALLEY, 4-0

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (09/10/00) - The Penn State field hockey team scored twice in each half to cruise to an easy 4-0 win over St. Joseph's at Bigler Field on Sunday. The defeat dropped the Hawks record to 1-4 on the season, while the Lions improved to 3-2. The Cityliners held their intra-state rivals in check until the 19-minute mark of the first half. At that point, PSU broke the scoring drought to take the lead, 1-0. It was a lead that would not be threatened. SJU's best offensive opportunity came late in the contest. With 13:37 left in the game, a scramble in front of the net resulted with the ball in the back of the PSU cage, but the Hawk's goal was waved off by the officials. The Hawks offensive woes continued against the Lady Lions, as PSU did not allow a shot the entire game. It was the fourth time in the last five outings that SJU was held scoreless. Goalkeeper Lauren Bradley turned in a solid outing for the Crimson and Gray. She turned back seven shots and fended off 14 PSU penalty corner. St. Joseph's will return to Hawk Hill this weekend for a pair of contests on the Finnesey Field turf. On Saturday, September 16, the Cityliners play host to future Atlantic 10 Conference rival Richmond. On Sunday, Hostra makes the trek to Philadelphia from Long Island. Action both days begins at Noon.
