HAWKS RALLY PAST PENN IN OT

PHILADELPHIA -(09/08/00) The St. Joseph's Field Hockey team clamed their first win of the season with a thrilling, 3-2, overtime victory over Penn at Franklin Field. St. Joseph's posted the victory on Katie Helder's penalty stroke with 5:41 left in the sudden death overtime. The stroke resulted from a deliberate foul in the circle. The goal was the first of the junior captain's Hawk career. Penn was in control for the majority of the contest, tallying the first goal of the game when sophomore Ali Corsi's scored an unassisted goal with 32:40 remaining. St. Joseph's then tied the game, when Kathy Sokalski put the ball into the net on a rebound attempt at 20:46. The Quakers took the lead 2-1, scoring on a penalty corner off the stick of Kylee Jakabowski with 16:55 left in the game. The Cityliners, however, stormed right back and duplicated that feat when Amy Schmoltze scored off a corner at the 13:24 mark to send the contest to sudden death overtime. Sokalski and senior Carly Pasceri collected the assists. In the first extra session, Penn had a flurry of shots, including a blast from junior Nikki Battiste that slid just wide of the post, which came near to ending the contest before SJU was able to clear the ball for a breakaway which resulted in a foul to give the Hawks a penalty stroke and the victory. With the win, the Hawks improved to 1-3 on the season. Penn, meanwhile, opened the year with a defeat. The Hawks have now won two straight in the series. SJU returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 10 at noon when the team travels to Happy Valley for a game with national power Penn State.
