SECOND HALF SURGE POWERS MAINE PAST SJU, 3-0

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The St. Joseph's University Field Hockey team slipped to 0-3 on the season after a 3-0 loss to Maine on Sunday. The Black Bears used a surge early in the second half to put the game out of reach. The victory evened UM's record at 2-2 on the season. SJU held the Bears at bay for much of the first half. UM finally broke through on a goal by Steph Chakmakian late in the period. She tallied off of an assist from Tara Bedard. The high powered Maine attack kept SJU netminder Lauren Bradley (Sewell, N.J./Washington Twp.) busy. They peppered the goal with 18 shots in the game and she managed to turn aside eight of them, four in each half. Maine put the game out of reach with a pair of goals early in the second period. The first goal by Kristi Knights, with 29:56 left in the game, came off a rebound. Bedard knocked in the Bears final goal with 22:22 remaining. Noriko Kariya, the younger sister of NHL stars Paul and Steve Kariya, collected the assist. The SJU offense again struggled to get on track and was shutout for the third straight time in 2000. SJU attempted just three shots in the game with freshman Amie Schmoltze (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland) providing all of them. The Hawks will be in action again, this week, when they return to the Philadelphia area for a match with cross-town rival Penn on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
