Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer and Field Hockey Compete in Stair Climb for Cystic Fibrosis

March 10, 2006

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's soccer and field hockey teams competed in a firendly stair climb competition to help the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. The Following is a recap of the event from two Hawks Emily Micir (field hockey) and Ashley Bugnar (women's soccer).

The field hockey team and soccer team were asked to participate in a fundraising stair climb for Cystic Fibrosis. For the weeks leading up to this event, nobody knew what to expect, or knew what we were in for. We had all been spending our Saturday mornings at Summit Training Center listening to Jessie talk the stair climb up.

We arrived at the field house at 8:45 to take a 9 o'clock bus ride down to center city. As we all sat on the bus, we waited for the Philadelphia skyline to appear, and we wandered in fear, which building we would be climbing. We arrived in front of the Mellon Bank Building, and as we looked out the bus window, we all got a little scared, because we could not even see the top of the building.

We went inside and registered, and donated a large amount of money towards Cystic Fibrosis. Everybody was very impressed at the amount of people participating in the climb, and everybody there was very excited that St. Joe's women's soccer and field hockey would come out to help.

Limbering up for the climb.

We all received stair climb team t-shirts that had a cute saying of "Don't sweat it, just climb!" We had a team warm up and then lined up to await the climb of the 53 floors. We were all extremely nervous, but knew we were doing it for a good cause.

When we all began climbing, we were sent up every 20 seconds. After about 10 flights, our legs began to burn. It felt like we would be climbing forever, and the higher you got, the hotter it got. When we reached the top, we got a feeling of accomplishment and exhaustion.

We took the 53 floors back down in the elevator and attended the "Survivor's Party." It was a fun day, because we got to do something for a good cause, and get our fitness in. We left the building praying not to sore, and hoping that it would be at least another year, before we had to climb that Philadelphia skyscraper again!
