Hawks Fall to Top-Seeded Richmond in A-10 Semifinals, 3-1
Nov. 4, 2005 PHILADELPHIA - For the fifth consecutive season, the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (10-10) saw its season come to an end in the Atlantic 10 Conference semifinals. SJU fell to #20 Richmond (13-4), the tournament's top seed, by a 3-1 margin on Temple University's Geasey Field. Junior Lauren Luft tallied the Hawks' lone goal with less than two minutes to play. The teams played to a stalemate for most of the first half, until the Spiders finally broke through for the game's first goal with 4:39 to play before intermission. Heather Wrublesky blasted a shot from outside the circle, off a pass from Shannon Taylor, that deflected off a Hawk defender and past SJU netminder Rebecca Cunfer for the game's first score. Wrublesky struck again early in the second stanza, again off a pass from Taylor. The tally came just 2:40 into the second half and made the score 2-0. Wrublesky completed the hat trick and iced the game with her third goal coming at the 18:23 mark of half number two. Luft brok up the shutout scoring off a pass from senior Katelyn O'Brien with 1:13 remaining. Despite the final score, the contest was evenly played with UR holding a 13-10 edge in shots, but SJU managing a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners. Cunfer finished with seven saves, while the Spiders' Michelle Swartz finished with five stops.
