Villanova Comeback Downs Field Hockey, 3-2, in Overtime
Oct. 29, 2008 PHILADELPHIA--The Saint Joseph's field hockey squad fell to Villanova, 3-2, in overtime on Wednesday afternoon at Buckley Field. Jen Wrublesky and Krista Bordogna both tallied goals that were outdone by three unanswered scores by the Wildcats. The combination of Lauren Wazzardo and Jenn Nazarethian accounted for all three of Villanova's goals in some fashion including the game-tying and game-winning goals. Wrublesky put away a Marisa Pizzi pass after Wrublesky snuck a shot past the outstretched arms of VU goalkeeper, Maura McCormick (two saves), for a 26th minute goal. Villanova (12-6) battled back in the second half, but a costly turnover in front of the cage led to Bordogna's tally in the 43rd minute for the 2-0 SJU advantage. Saint Joseph's (11-7) couldn't hold off the Wildcats as 25 minutes later Wuzzardo's long angling pass found the stick of Nazarethian who completed the play to cut the lead in half with 13:48 remaining. Five minutes later, Villanova used a penalty corner to provide Wuzzardo a scoring opportunity that she promptly put away to knot up the score. Just 27 seconds into the overtime period, Nazarethian found Wuzzardo on a breakaway for the game-winner. Kelly Swanick provided three saves in net for the Hawks, who completed their home slate of games, as well as their non-conference contests. The Hawks will return to action on Saturday to take on Temple at Geasey Field at 1:00 p.m. A win for the Hawks will have them face off against Richmond in the semifinals of the A-10 Championships the following week at Geasey Field, while a loss will have the Hawks see nationally-ranked UMass.
