Field Hockey Falls at Villanova, 7-1
Oct. 27, 2009
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova got four goals from Meredith Sabatini, three of them in the first half, as the Wildcats took down the Saint Joseph's field hockey team by a 7-1 score on Tuesday night. Junior forward Jen Wrublesky scored the lone goal for SJU. Villanova (9-7) scored early and often as Sabatini took off on a breakaway and beat junior goalkeeper Kelly Swanick just 2:10 into the game. Amy Jackson tallied 90 seconds later on a corner to double the lead. After another Sabatini goal, Saint Joseph's (6-9) got on the board when Wrublesky took a pass from senior Anne Schreuders on a corner opportunity to cut the deficit to 3-1. Unfortunately for the Crimson and Gray, that would be all the scoring they would muster, as Sabatini secured her hat trick with 4:35 remaining in the half before scoring a fourth just after the break. She then added an assist on a goal by Abby Sordoni at 52:06 before Sam Haas closed the scoring with just under 12 minutes to go. Swanick made two saves in the first half, while sophomore Liz Messaros made one in the second. Maura McCormick had eight stops for the Wildcats. The Hawks will face off with Richmond on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Buckley Field. The winner will have the inside track on the top seed in next weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship in Amherst, Mass.
