SJU Edges La Salle, 1-0, to Keep Postseason Hopes Alive

Oct. 24, 2004

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - Senior Shelley Meier scored on a penalty stroke 13:33 into the second half to lift Saint Joseph's (9-7, 2-3 A-10) to a 1-0 victory over La Salle (5-12, 1-4 A-10) in Atlantic 10 field hockey at Hank DeVincent Field. The win keeps the Hawks A-10 Tournament hopes alive entering the final week of the regular season.

The first 35 minutes of play seemed to be a warm up for both teams, as the clubs combined for just one shot and five penalty corners in the first half.

SJU snapped a scoreless draw when Meier converted a penalty stroke at the 48:33 mark of the game. SJU earned the attmept after La Salle goalkeeper Colleen Bolger was charged with sitting on the ball.

The Hawks had an opportunity to add insurance late, after Bolger was again charged with a penalty for falling on the ball with 4:46 left to play. Meier again attempted the penalty stroke, but this time Bolger made the save.

La Salle had several quality attempts in the second half, including a pair of shots that clanked off the post. Hawk netminder Rebecca Cunfer finished with two saves, while Bolger made four stops.

SJU returns to action on Wednesday against Georgetown and then closes out the regular season with a must-win game against Temple on Saturday.
