Rhody Edges Saint Joseph's in Strokes, 3-2
Oct. 23, 2005 PHILADELPHIA - Despite a 30-13 shot advantage, Saint Joseph's (10-8, 3-3 A-10) dropped a 3-2 decision to Rhode Island (7-9, 2-4 A-10) in strokes on Finnesey Field. The Rams converted the game-winner in the first round of sudden death, after both team's remained even following two complete rounds of strokes. URI senior Amy Brown played a key role in penalty strokes. She converted all three of her attempts, including the final stroke of the opening round that extended the stroke-off, the Ram's lone made stroke in the second round and then the game-winner. The teams ended the first round of strokes all even at 3-3 and both teams could only muster one made stroke in the second round. SJU junior Charlsie Agro had an opportunity to clinch the contest for SJU with the final stroke of the second round, but her attempt was turned away. The Hawks took leads in both the first and second half, but Rhode Island was able to answer both times. Junior Nicole Antonini tipped home the first goal with 3:01 left in the first half after senior Jackie Aronchick carried the ball into the center of the circle and pushed the ball toward the goal. It appeared the the Hawks would hold the lead at intermission, but URI responded when freshman Christine Kazmierski banged a ball off the far post and into the cage with less than one minute to go before the break. Sophomore Brianne Miller put the Hawks on top 2-1 9:30 into the second half. She blasted a shot into the goal from the right side. URI responded quickly scoring just 6:38 later to make the score 2-2. Sophomore Jen Cetenich netted the goal off an assist from Jamie Adams.
The remainder of regulation and overtime were the domain of the goaltenders as both SJU's Rebecca Cunfer the URI's M.J. Britt took turns making big saves. Cunfer had several key stops and finished with seven saves for the game, but Britt was even more spectacular notching 17 saves. SJU finished with overwhelming advantages in shots (30-13) and penalty corners (13-6). SJU recognized its five seniors - Jackie Aronchick, Emily Mannion, Shelley Meier, Hilary Moody, and Katelyn O'Brien - in pregame ceremonies. The Hawks close out the regular season and will seek to earn an Atlantic 10 playoff berth at Temple on Saturday, October 29. |
