Field Hockey Shuts Down Ram Offense, Earns 3-0 Victory over Rhode Island

PHILADELPHIA - Two goals from junior forward Marisa Pizzi powered Saint Joseph's past Rhode Island by a score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Field Hockey action at Finnesey Field. Junior Krista Bordogna scored an insurance goal late in the second half to seal the win. Senior Theresa Barbati on both of Pizzi's goals. Saint Joseph's (7-6, 2-1 Atlantic 10) took control early, dominating play in both halves of the field. The Hawks peppered the Rhode Island cage with shot after shot, finally breaking through midway through the half when Pizzi's shot into the left side of the cage beat URI goalkeeper M.J. Britt. The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime having outshot the Rams 15-1 in the half. The second half matched the first as SJU struck quickly to double its lead. Pizzi poked another shot past Britt less than three minutes into the stanza, putting the Hawks on top, 2-0. The goal put her in the team lead for the season with five. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, sophomore Jennifer Schultz sent a pass in to Bordogna, who slotted home her second goal of the season. Rhode Island (7-5, 1-2 Atlantic 10) received solid goalkeeping from M.J. Britt. Despite allowing three goals, she recorded 14 saves for the Rams. For the game, the Hawks outshot the visitors by a 24-2 margin. Rebecca Cunfer turned away the only shot she faced to earn her second shutout of the season and the 15th of her career. That total ties her for second in program history, three behind the record of 18.
The Hawks return to action on Sunday afternoon with a game against Massachusetts. Game time is set for noon at Finnesey Field. |
