Overtime Winner Sends Field Hockey to 2-1 Win over La Salle
Oct. 10, 2008
PHILADELPHIA - Senior forward Marisa Pizzi netted her seventh goal of the season at the 3:38 mark of overtime to propel the Saint Joseph's field hockey team past La Salle, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Buckley Field. The goal is Pizzi's fifth game-winner of the year. La Salle (5-9 overall, 0-1 Atlantic 10) drew first blood in the clash of city rivals as Lindsay Fry batted in a deflection with just under seven minutes to go in the first half. The Explorers were looking to take a one-goal lead into the break, but freshman Ellen Rowe took the ball on a breakaway and went around goalkeeper Emma Ruth, who had come out of the cage, and tucked the ball in with just six seconds remaining in the stanza to tie the score. Saint Joseph's (9-4, 1-0) dominated the run of play, outshooting the Explorers 9-2 in the first half and 7-4 in the second, but neither team was able to break through during regulation. Pizzi had the best chance, firing just wide with about two minutes left. SJU goalkeeper Kelly Swanick made two saves on La Salle's Kara Harpel in the first two minutes of the extra frame. About two minutes later, Pizzi's goal ended the festivities on a high note for SJU. Pizzi took a pass in front of the cage from Atlantic 10 leading scorer Kellie Walter and beat Ruth to the stick side to send the Hawk fans home happy. 2008 is the third straight season that the Hawks have started conference play with a win. SJU will try to move to 2-0 on Sunday evening as the Rams of West Chester will visit Buckley Field. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m.
