Field Hockey Returns to Winning Ways, Defeats Delaware, 1-0
Sept. 21, 2008
NEWARK, Del. - Saint Joseph's junior Anne Schreuders scored her fifth goal of the season late in the second half to provide all the necessary offense for the SJU field hockey team as the Hawks notched a 1-0 victory over Delaware on Sunday afternoon. Redshirt freshman Kelly Swanick made seven saves to record her third shutout of the season. Saint Joseph's (6-2) improved its road record to 4-1, with the single loss coming ironically enough at Drexel's Buckley Field, where SJU is playing its home games this season. The first half of the contest was a defensive struggle. Delaware (1-6) outshot the Hawks 5-3 for the stanza, but neither team was able to break through. That changed in the second half as Schreuders scored with less than 13 minutes to go in the game. Her initial shot from the right side was saved by Blue Hen goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades, but Schreuders dove after the rebound and put it into the cage for the game's only goal. Swanick made four of her seven saves after the Hawks took the lead, including one with 17 seconds left on the clock. The Hawks will wait a week before taking to the turf next Sunday, September 28 for a home contest with Sacred Heart at Buckley Field. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
