PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team upset the previously undefeated University of Delaware on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1. Stellar goalkeeping, solid defense, and a clutch penalty shot keyed the Hawks victory over the #14-ranked Blue Hens.

Playing the last game of a season-long five game homestand on Finnesey Field, an energized Saint Joseph's (3-4) squad started the first half by outshooting the Blue Hens 7-3. Senior Brianne Miller scored her first goal of the season on a penalty corner attempt with just 23 seconds remaining in the first half. Seniors Katie Young and Theresa Barbati assisted on the goal, which came on the Hawks' only corner attempt of the game.

The Hawks maintained the offensive pressure early in the second half. Just under ten minutes into the second half redshirt sophomore Mary Beaman was awarded a penalty stroke. Beaman capitalized on the opportunity, firing a blast over the keeper's shoulder to spot the Hawks a 2-0 lead.

Delaware (7-1) then took control of the offensive flow of the game, cutting the deficit in half with 21:38 left in the game when Molly Burke scored off a penalty corner. The goal, Burke's fifth goal of the season, was assisted by Jackie Tait and Rae Everson. From that point forward the Hawk defense held firm, keeping Delaware out of the cage, despite surrendering six penalty corners in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer notched seven saves, keeping her goals-against average at 0.95.

Saint Joseph's begins a four-game road trip on Wednesday at Lafayette. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
