Hawks Edges #19 Delaware, 2-1
Sept. 16, 2005 PHILADELPHIA - A pair of first half goals by senior Katelyn O'Brien and junior Nicole Antonini along with a solid defensive effort propelled the Saint Joseph's field hockey team (4-2) to a 2-1 victory over #19 Delaware (4-3) on Finnesey Field. The Blue Hens got off to a quick start scoring on a penalty stroke just 3:41 into the contest. Junior Lindsey Piester converted the attempt to make it 1-0. Saint Joseph's equalized the game on a penalty corner midway through the opening stanza. O'Brien tallied the goal by redirecting a shot from junior Maryann Reis into the cage at the 13:09 mark. The goal was her fourth of the season. Antonini scored her sixth goal of the season and the eventual game-winner with time winding down in the first half. Hawk freshman Marissa Pizzi found herself with the ball to the right of the goal and made a nice pass across the front of the goal mouth where a wide-open Antonini banged the ball home for a 2-1 lead in the 32nd minute. Delaware elevated its play in the second half in an attempt to score the tying goal, but neither team could muster any significant scoring opportunities, as the SJU defense was up to the task. UD finished with a slight edge in penalty corners (7-6) and shots (9-7). SJU netminder finished with a game-high four saves. Her counterpart the Hens' Megan Allen added a couple of stops. Saint Joesph's hosts its anual alumnae/varsity game on Sunday before traveling to Lafayette on Wednesday.
