Box Score

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team lost a hard-fought contest on Saturday, falling to Delaware by a 4-2 score. The Hawks received goals from senior Anne Schreuders and junior Jen Wrublesky in the effort.

Delaware (3-2) started the scoring just over seven minutes in as Amanda McCardell had a shot blocked before she tipped in her own rebound to put UD ahead, 1-0. Rae Everson doubled the lead three minutes later, firing one home from the right side of the arc past an outstretched Kelly Swanick.

Schreuders got Saint Joseph's (0-4) back in the game four minutes later with a blast from the top of the arc for her second goal of the season. The Blue Hens answered with 13:35 to go in the stanza as Kelsey Schlezes scored on a penalty corner to restore the two-goal advantage.

With 5:28 remaining, Wrublesky added her second of the year as well, sending a laser past UD keeper Noelle Diana to get the Hawks back within one at halftime.

The teams went back and forth for a majority of the second half until Delaware was awarded a penalty stroke with 11:20 to go. Michelle Drummonds snapped one into the bottom left corner of the cage to score what would be the final goal of the game.

Swanick made three saves in the first half, while Liz Messaros made her collegiate debut, stopping four shots in 45 minutes of play. Diana made three saves for UD.

Defensively, the Hawks managed to keep UD standout Casey Howard out of the scoring ledger for the first time this season. She had scored at least one goal in Delaware's first four games.

The Hawks return to Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon for a match with city rival Drexel. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
