SJU Falls to Powerful Penn State, 6-1
Sept. 11, 2005 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Saint Joseph's (3-2) could muster just one goal, a penalty stroke by senior Katelyn O'Brien, and was unable to stop a high-powered Penn State (6-1) attack and fell to the Nittany Lions, 6-1. Using a quick strike attack, four different players scored for Penn State. PSU sophomore Shaun Banta opened things up a little over 10 minutes into the game. Saint Joseph's held Penn State scoreless for the next 10 minutes, but Lion junior Annelise Legel took a cross and knocked the ball in for the Nittany Lions' second goal of the day. Penn State struck again less than two minutes later when All-American Bekah Hostetler scored off a rebounded shot to give her team the 3-0 lead at the break. In the second half Penn State kept the pressure on, when Britney Long tipped in a shot at the 40:46 minute mark. Thirty-two seconds later Natalie Berrena recovered a loose ball at the top of the circle and scored to give Penn State a 5-0 lead. Saint Joseph's scored its only goal of the game off a penalty stroke which was awarded after a ball that had a clear path to the goal hit a Penn State player's foot. Katelyn O'Brien took the stroke and hit a high shot that went past Penn State goalkeeper Megan Akstin. Akstin tallied one save. Her counterpart for Saint Joe's, Rebecca Cunfer, recorded 10 saves in the contest. Banta scored once more at the 59:49 mark, an unassisted goal, which was her second of the day.
