FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sophomore Nicole Gerdes scored her second goal of the season, but the Saint Joseph's field hockey team fell at Fairfield on Sunday by a 2-1 score.

Fairfield (4-2) opened the scoring in the fifth minute as Hillary Fitts notched her first goal of the season.

The Stags doubled their lead on a penalty corner with 25:55 to play as Felicitas Heinen scored her team-best seventh goal of the year off a feed from Shealyn Testa.

Saint Joseph's (1-4) got on the board with just under 10 minutes to go as Gerdes took a pass from Jordan Martin on a penalty corner to cut the deficit to one.

The Hawks secured three late penalty corners in a furious rally to tie the game, but the Fairfield defense stood tall to preserve the win.

Goalkeeper Kate Mitchell made six saves for SJU while Abby Hoover added a defensive save.

The Hawks will return to Ellen Ryan Field on Friday for the first of five consecutive home games as they take on Quinnipiac at 3:00 p.m.
