Field Hockey Shuts Down UMBC, 5-0
Sept. 2, 2006
PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's field hockey team remains undefeated after winning its second game of the season. Despite rainy weather conditions, the Hawks were able to shutout the Retrievers 5-0 Saturday at Finnesey Field. Seniors Nicole Antonini and Lauren Luft combined with junior Theresa Barbati for the goals. The Hawks opened up the scoring early as Barbati tallied a goal just over a minute into the game deflecting a shot from senior captain Maureen Casserly. This would be the only goal in the first half as the Hawks were unable to capitalize on other shots, ending the first half 1-0. SJU broke the game open scoring three goals in a span of 3:33 minutes, just under 11 minutes into the second half. Antonini scored back-to-back goals, the first being unassisted and the second coming off a pass from Luft. Luft then closed out the scoring with two goals of her own. The first was a blast from the top of the arc assisted by junior Brianne Miller and the second coming from a scramble in front of the goal where she tucked it into the cage. The Hawks dominated the game getting off 29 shots with most of the play taking place in their offensive end. Junior Goalkeeper Rebecca Cunfer earned her second shutout of the season while sophomore Gabriella Shrier saw 9:00 minutes of action at the end of the second half.
The Hawks return to action Wednesday Sept. 6th at University of Pennsylvania. |
