BIG SECOND HALF HELPS DAYTON RALLY PAST ST. JOSEPH’S, 72-63

PHILADELPHIA (1/19/01) Dayton (9-8, 3-3 A-10) rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat St. Joseph's (10-7, 4-2 A-10) at the Fieldhouse, 72-63. The Flyers were powered by a career-high 30 points from Stephanie Miller. Susan Moran led three Hawks in double-figures with 19 points. Holding a seven-point lead at halftime, 29-22, SJU struggled to get on track out of the gate. UD capitalized on the slow start by using a 13-4 spurt to knot the game at 35-35 just six-minutes into the second half. Miller sparked the run by scoring 8 points in the spurt, including a pair of threes. Over the next six minutes, neither team could seize control of the second half. The game was tied seven times and the lead changed hands on three occasions during that span. A second spurt by the Flyers, this one 14-4, then broke open the game. The streak put UD in front 64-54 with less than two minutes remaining. A late Hawk flurry from three-point range was not enough to close the gap. In addition to Moran, who finished one carom shy of a double-double, the Hawks received 13 points and 10 assists from Angela Zampella and 11 points from freshman Irina Krasnoshiok. The 10 helpers by Zampella moved her within six of Debbie Black's school record of 718. Dayton creeped out to an early lead, but the Hawks knotted the contest at 16-16 with 6:31 left in the first half. A 12-0 spurt by the Crimson and Gray then put SJU in command late in the half, 28-16. A pair of three-pointers by Amra Mehmedic and three straight hoops by Moran provided the fuel behind the surge. St. Joseph's will have little rest, as the Hawks return to the court on Sunday afternoon. Nationally ranked Xavier will invade the Fieldhouse for a key Atlantic 10 matchup. The game will be televised by the Atlantic 10 Television Network on CN-8.
