ST. JOSEPH'S SELLS OUT SECOND ANNUAL "FIELD TRIP TO THE FIELDHOUSE"
PHILADELPHIA (1/09/01) St. Joseph's University's Second Annual
"Fieldtrip to the Fieldhouse" Day sponsored by Newspapers in
Education - Philadelphia Inquirer/Daily News on Friday, January 12 is
sold out. The event, in conjunction with the Hawk women's basketball
game that day against Duquesne at Noon, will bring over 3,000
elementary school children from throughout the Delaware Valley to
SJU's historic Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The theme for the day is
"Academics and Athletics." A variety of speakers and programs have
been organized to address the value of combining these subjects.
The festivities will kickoff at 10:00 a.m. with Comcast SportsNet
personality Al Meltzer addressing the crowd about the day's theme.
Meltzer will be followed by a basketball skills session hosted by former
Hawk great Amy Mallon. Also speaking will be St. Joseph's University
head women's basketball coach Stephanie V. Gaitley.
The highlight of the day will tip off at Noon when the Hawk women take
on Duquesne in an exciting Atlantic 10 basketball matchup. Halftime
entertainment will be provided by the Philadelphia 76ers mascot Hip
Hop.
The game, which has been sold out since Christmas, stands as the just
the third advance sellout of a regular season women's basketball game
in the Philadelphia region. Last year, SJU had advance sellouts of its
game with Tennessee on December 19 and the First annual Field Trip
Day on February 3.
