ZAMPELLA LEADS HAWKS OVER UMASS IN A-10 OPENER

AMHERST, MA (1/04/00) Angela Zampella continued her brilliant play to lead St. Joseph's (7-5, 1-0 A-10) to a 66-54 win over Massachusetts (5-7, 0-1) at the Mullins Center. Zampella narrowly missed a triple-double, finishing with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists, while playing all 40 minutes. She was supported by double figure efforts from freshman Irina Krasnoshiok (14 points) and junior Susan Moran. The Hawks senior captain, Zampella scored 17 of her points in the second half. She was critical down the stretch knocking down 8-8 from the charity stripe in the game's final 1:31. Her clutch play served to quell UMass, which had rallied from a 17-point deficit to trail by only five points 38-33. Zampella filled the void for SJU, as Moran was limited to a season-low 11 points in just 21 minutes do to foul trouble. The Minutewomen did a good job in the post, outscoring the Hawks 35-13 in the paint. SJU, however, answered by bombing away from the perimeter. The Hawks made 9-22 three-point attempts, outdistancing UM 27-6 from beyond the arc. SJU turned in its best defensive half of basketball in the first period against the Minutewomen. UM was held to 17 points, the Hawks season-low defensively, on just 6 of 23 shooting from the floor. Additionally, UMass was limited to a single field goal over the final 8:40 of the half. The Hawks meanwhile connected on four of their season-best 9 three-pointers prior to intermission and led at the break 25-17. The Hawks will hit the road immediately following tonight's game and head for Kingston, Rhode Island. SJU will meet URI in the second contest of a three game road trip on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. The game will be televised in New England by Cox Communications.
