SJU HOLDS OFF SETON HALL FOR HAWK CLASSIC CROWN, ZAMPELLA NAMED MVP
PHILADELPHIA, PA (12/30/00) Angela
Zampella scored 24 points, grabbed 9 rebounds
and handed out 8 assists to lead St. Joseph's
(6-5) to a 63-52 win over Seton Hall (8-4) in the
Championship game of the Pathmark Hawk
Classic at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse.
Zampella was named the Most Valuable Player
of the tournament for the third time. Susan Moran joined her on the
all-tournament team.
Zampella did it all for the Crimson and Gray turning in a brilliant
all-around game. Down the stretch she was particularly effective, as the
Hawks held off a furious Pirate rally. Seton Hall trailed by 12-points with
7:37 remaining, but used a 12-1 run to trim the Hawk advantage to just
one point, 51-50. Zampella then connected on seven out of eight from
the stripe in the final five minutes to lead SJU to victory. Moran, too, was
critical in the second half. She came alive after intermission to finish
with 18 points.
The game bounced back-and-forth in the early going, before the Hawks
took the lead for good, 10-9, with 13:21 remaining in the first half. A 12-3
spurt by the Crimson and Gray gave SJU a 22-12 advantage. Zampella
tallied a pair of buckets during the run, while freshman Irina Krasnoshiok
knocked down a three-pointer and a pair of free throws. The largest
Hawk advantage came at the 1:36 mark with SJU leading 32-18. They
led at the break 32-22.
The Hawks won the Hawk Classic title for the fourth time in the
tournament's eleven years. Zampella, meanwhile is the only player in
tournament history to be selected to the all-championship team four
times. SJU will now take to the road for a tedious three-game road trip,
which includes stops at Massachusetts on Thursday, Rhode Island on
Saturday and George Washington on January 9.
