MORAN AND ZAMPELLA LEAD SJU INTO HAWK CLASSIC TITLE GAME

PHILADELPHIA, PA (12/29/00) The dynamic duo of Susan Moran and Angela Zampella each turned in solid performances, as St. Joseph's (5-5) defeated Central Connecticut State (4-4), 59-51, in the semifinals of the Pathmark Hawk Classic at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. Moran finished with a game-high 25 points, while Zampella chipped in 8 points and handed out 11 assists. The Cityliners took command of the game early, opening up a 13-point lead, 16-3, just six minutes into the contest. Keying the SJU attack early was the sharp shooting of junior Jane Meade and freshman Amra Mehmedic. Meade netted the Hawks first two buckets of the game, while Mehmedic connected on 3 three-pointers in the first half and had 11 points at intermission. St. Joseph's led at the break 30-21. A decisive 10-1 run to open the second half by the Hawks lifted SJU to its largest advantage of the game at 42-22. The Blue Devils battled in order to whittle the lead down in the second half, but the game's final 8-point margin was as close as they could get. Moran was virtually unstoppable in the second stanza, scoring 21 points and grabbing 7 boards after the break. Eileen Battagliese led the Blue Devils with 15 points and 11 rebounds. For the Hawks, Meade finished with a career-high 7 assists. With the win, St. Joseph's advanced to the Hawk Classic title game for the eleventh consecutive year. The Crimson and Gray will meet Seton Hall in the Championship game at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. The game will be broadcast locally on CN-8.
