Women's Basketball Tops Montenotte Glanmire, 58-45, For Second Win In Ireland

CORK, IRELAND - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team picked up its second win on its tour or Ireland and Northern Ireland with a 58-45 victory over Montenotte Glanmire Friday evening.
Paced by 11 point from Kelsey Berger, the Hawks controlled the tempo in the first quarter. Berger helped SJU take a 23-14 advantage as the Hawks were able to create open looks.
Fighting a strong squad from Cork, Saint Joseph's continued to hold a double-digit lead in the second quarter as Berger connected for five points, while juniors Ilze Gotfrida and Ashley Robinson added four points apiece to give the team a 37-26 lead at halftime.
Both squads played a strong defensive game in the third quarter as Montenotte Glanmire got the best of the Hawks, outscoring them 9-8 in the 10-minute period. Saint Joseph's responded though as senior Ashley Prim sparked the Hawks to a hot start in the fourth. Prim scored seven of SJU's first nine points in the quarter and helped the Hawks pull away to a 54-37 lead with just over seven minutes to go.
The Hawks would continue to hold the opposing Irish squad at a distance for the remainder of the quarter as SJU improved to 2-0 on its tour.
Individually, Prim and Chatilla van Grinsven each added 10 points apiece, while Gotfrida finished with six points. Junior Erin Shields and redshirt sophomore Natasha Cloud each tallied four points apiece, with Mireia Vila and Kasie Parker chipping in two points each. Freshman Sarah Fairbanks rounded out the scoring for the Hawks with a free throw.
The Hawks will play their third game of the trip this Sunday in Dublin.
