June 15, 2009
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Joseph's women's basketball announced today Mireia Vila Cabiró has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Hawks beginning in the 2009-10 season. A six-foot combination guard/forward, Cabiró has spent the past four seasons with her club team, U.E. Mataro, at both the junior (ages 16 to 18) and senior (over 18) levels. In 2007, she helped her team place third overall in the Catalan Championship, only to return this year to guide the team to the Catalan title and a spot at the Junior Spanish Championship. This spring, at the junior national championships, Cabiró averaged 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.8 assists per contests over a five-game span and earned Ideal Five honors as she helped her team finish second overall. A standout both locally and nationally, Cabiró has been invited to the Spanish National Team U-15, U-16 and U-18 selection camp, competing with the U-16 squad in international competition in Italy and France. Currently, she is one of 15 players competing for a spot on the U-18 National Team that will be participating in the European Championships this July in Sweden. Cabiró joins early signees Ashley Prim (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral), Ashley Robinson (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Shelby Smith (Waterloo, Iowa/Waterloo West) to compose a talented incoming rookie class for Saint Joseph's.
