Saint Joseph's Falls At Seton Hall, 57-36, In Women's Basketball Action

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - Saint Joseph's women's basketball trailed by 11 early to Seton Hall and was never able to recover, as the Hawks fell 57-36 to the Pirates Sunday at Walsh Gymnasium. Seton Hall jumped out to an early 11-0 lead, holding the Hawks scoreless over the opening four minutes of the game. Monique Blake capped the Pirates run with a layup at 15:43. The Hawks countered using a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to seven, 13-6, on jump shot by red-shirt freshman forward Erica Pollock. Leading by seven, Seton Hall went on an 8-0 run to open a 21-6 lead with 11:28 remaining in the first stanza. Despite trailing by 15, the Hawks refused to give up and mounted a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to five, 23-18, as sophomore guard Whitney Ffrench converted a three-point play after being fouled on a layup at 3:24. The Pirates used a 9-0 run that spanned from the final minute of the first half to 18:21 of the second half, to take a 32-18 lead. Forward Heta Korpivaara capped the run with two of her game-high 19 points. From there, Saint Joseph's would get no closer than 10 points as the Pirates opened their lead to 21, 57-36, to close the contest. For the game, Saint Joseph's finished 13-of-46 from the floor for 28.3 percent, while the Pirates went 25-of-59 for 42.4 percent. Seton Hall out rebounded the Hawks 42-25 and won the battle in the paint, outscoring Saint Joseph's 30-18. Saint Joseph's was led by Ffrench's career-high 13 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe. Pollock chipped in with seven points and junior forward Faith Schutte added four points to go with team-best seven rebounds.
Korpivaara led all scorers with 19 points for Seton Hall and forward Julie Costello posted a double-double, scoring 13 points and collecting 15 rebounds. With the loss Saint Joseph's falls to 2-7 on the season, while Seton Hall improves to 3-3. Saint Joseph's returns to action Saturday, December 11, as the Hawks host # 24/RV Villanova at 2 p.m. |
