Saint Joseph's Falls at Drexel, 59-49

PHILADELPHIA - The Saint Joseph's women's basketball team accomplished a dubious first on Saturday, falling at Drexel, 59-49. The loss marks the first time the Hawks have fallen to Drexel in six match-ups.

The Dragons and Hawks exchanged baskets in the early minutes, with Saint Joseph's junior guard Christine Roth drilling a three pointer from two steps behind the arc to tie the game at seven apiece 4:23 into the game.

The game remained tight as the Hawks clung to a 24-22 lead with 4:07 remaining in the half, Unfortunately for Saint Joseph's, the Dragons went on a 12-3 run to close out the stanza, taking a 34-27 lead into the locker room.

Following Roth's fifth three pointer of the game to start the second half, Drexel opened up a 41-30 lead using a 7-0 run, from 18:31 to 15:59.

Saint Joseph's continued to fight and brought Drexel's lead to 48-39 on a 5-0 run. Junior Christen Scanlon capped the run, making a steal on an in-bounds pass and converting a lay up.

Despite cutting the lead to nine, Saint Joseph's would get no closer as Drexel extended its lead to as many as 14 over the final eight minutes.

For the game, the Dragons held the Hawks to 34 percent (18-53) from the field, including 8-30 (26.7 percent) in the second half. Drexel finished 21-51 from the floor for 40.4 percent.

Roth led Saint Joseph's in scoring with a career-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior Kelly Springman, playing in her first game of the season following surgery to repair a torn meniscus, added nine points and a game-high six assists. Sophomore Erica Pollock grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and added seven points.
 

 

For Drexel, Katrina Martin scored a game-high 16 points while Catherine Scanlon, twin sister of SJU's Christen Scanlon added 15 points and nine rebounds.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 2-1 on the season, while Drexel improves to 1-0.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Illinois at 7 p.m.
