LABOY QUALIFIES FOR NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

LOCK HAVEN, PA (11/15/03) -- Sophomore Andre Laboy, the 2003 Atlantic 10 Individual Champion, became the first Hawk since Karl Savage in 2000 to qualify for the NCAA Championships with his fourth place finish at Saturday's Mid-Atlantic Regional at Lock Haven. The Danbury, Conn. native covered the 10k course in a time of 30:35, just nine seconds off the leader, Penn State's Dan Mazzocco. The individuals from the top two teams, Villanova and Georgetown, earn automatic berth's to the NCAA Championships in Waterloo, Iowa next Monday. Laboy, as one of the top four finishers not from Nova or Georgetown, earns an at-large berth. SJU, which finished 12th of 27 teams, didn't have another finisher until freshman Teddy Meyers placed 71st in a time of 32:17. Sophomore Dave Masse followed 16 seconds later for a 81st place showing, while junior Collin Martin was five seconds behind in 87th. Senior Rich Cullin rounded out the Hawk top five with a 91st (32:48) place finish. Sophomore Joe Mohn (95th, 32:58) and senior Rob Hewitt (135th, 34:38) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, for SJU. Laboy travels to Iowa for the NCAA Championships on November 24, while the rest of the Hawk squad will compete at the IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on November 22.
