HAWKS PLACE 11TH AT NCAA REGIONALS
DAVIS, WV (11/16/02) -- The Saint Joseph's University men's cross country team finished 11th of 25 teams Saturday at the NCAA District II race held at Canaan Valley Golf Course in Davis, W.V. Freshman Andre Laboy, fresh off the being named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year in his last race, led the Hawks with a 40th place finish in the field of 174 runners. He completed the 10K race in a time of 31:53.3.
Classmate Joe Mohn finished 22 seconds behind his Danbury, Conn. neighbor with a time of 32:15.1 to finish 51st. Another rookie, Mike DiDio placed 75th with a time of 32:43.9.
Rounding out the top five for the Hawks were seniors Tim Fisher (78th, 32:45.6) and senior Matt Lewis (101st, 33:23.3). Junior Rich Cullin placed sixth for SJU and 118th overall with a time of 33:57.2 and sophomore Collin Martin was just four seconds behind with a time of 34:01.1 to place 120th.
Villanova won the team championship, and along with Georgetown, advance to the NCAA Championships to be held on Monday, November 25 at Terre Haute, Ind. La Salle, the A-10s team champion, placed fourth overall and will wait on word for an at-large bid to the NCAAs. The Hoyas' Mike Smith won the individual race with a time of 30:28.9.
Saint Joseph's concludes their 2002 season at the ECAC/ICAAAAs on Saturday, November 23.
