SJU PLACES 3rd AT NATIONAL INVITATIONAL
UNIVERSITY PARK, PA (10/13/01) - For the
second straight week senior Bill Hoffman
stepped up to lead the Saint Joseph's men's
cross country team, this time at the National
Invitational hosted by Penn State. Hoffman
placed 13th overall to lead SJU to a third place
finish at the 11-team meet.
"Bill ran a terrific race, he is exactly where we
hoped he would be at this year," stated SJU
head coach Mike Glavin. "Tim Fisher really
stepped it up today, as Dan Mays ran a good race,"
Hoffman, the A-10 Performer of the Week last week, again placed first
for SJU, completing the 5-2 mile course in a time of 26:46.57. Senior
Ben Koch, the team's normal #1 runner, missed this week's race as he
served in his brother's wedding party in Maryland.
Senior Brian Rosetti placed second for the Hawks for the second
straight week, and 23rd overall in a time of 27:09.77. He was followed
closely by juniors Jim Smith (23d overall, 27:10.11) and Tim Fisher
(27th, 27:14.86). A walk-on, Fisher "has been running really come
around after two years of working hard" states Glavin.
Fellow junior Dan Mays rounded out the Hawk scorers with a 32nd place
finish (27:25.81).
William & Mary won the National Invitatioanl with a total of 21 points.
Penn State placed second with 50 points while the Hawks compiled 91
points to best James Madison (101) for third place. Lehigh rounded out
the top five with 143 points. William & Mary's Sean Graham won the
event in a time of 25:54.18.
SJU is off next week and then will defend its A-10 championship on
Belmont Plateau on Saturday, October 27th (10:00 AM).
