SJU FINISHES 7TH AT WILLIAM AND MARY INVITATIONAL

WILLIAMSBURG, VA (9/23) After having last week's Spiked Shoe Invitational canceled due to the terrorist attacks, the Saint Joseph's men's cross country team entered this weekend's William and Mary Invitational. Head coach Mike Glavin decided to split his team into two squads, with his "A" team competing in a 6000m run against a strong field featuring William and Mary, Georgetown, Virginia and James Madison. Seniors Ben Koch, who placed tenth overall in a time of 18:22.2, and Bill Hoffman, who ran 16th overall (18:32.2) led the team in the event which did not tally team scores. "Even though this particular race was a non-scored event, we ran very well against four very good teams," stated Glavin, the 2000 A-10 Coach of the Year, "It was a good test for us at this time." In the "official" 8000m run, freshman Collin Martin came out on top for the Hawk "B" team placing 12th overall (26:28.7). Martin, who topped all Richmond runners in the event, was named Atlantic Rookie of the Week for his efforts. Sophomore Rich Cullin was also explosive for the Hawks, finishing 13th overall (26:31.4) while freshman Brad Schmidt, ( 31st, 27:05.4), junior Kevin Glah, (57th, 28:06.4) and senior Mike Miles, (62nd, 28:18.6) rounded out the SJU top five. The Hawks finished seventh overall in a field of 10 teams. Host William and Mary won the event, finishing with 37 points while SJU posted 155 points. SJU will next run on Saturday, October 6th at the Paul Short Invitational hosted by Lehigh.
