KOCH LEADS SJU TO 4TH PLACE SHOWING AT FORDHAM
New York, NY (9/8) Saint Joseph's opened
the 2001 men's cross country season with a
solid fourth place showing at the Fordham
Invitational. Senior Ben Koch led the way,
placing fifth overall in a time of 26:04.79.
"It was a good first run for our team," stated
Hawk Coach Mike Glavin, the 2000 A-10 Coach
of the Year. "Ben and Geoff (Fahey) raced very
well. Placing fourth without Brian Rosetti
(injured) and Bill Hoffman (off day) is an
acceptable result."
Junior Geoff Fahey placed second for the Hawks, and 11th overall in a
field that featured 17 teams. Senior Bill James (30th, 27:15.3), junior
Tim Fisher (37th, 27:22.8) and junior Jim Smith (42nd, 27:33.5) rounded
out the SJU top five.
Duke won the event, finishing with 31 points. The Blue Devils were
followed by La Salle, one of the favorites along with 2000 champ SJU for
the A-10 title this year, placed second with 62 points while Harvard ran
third (101 pts.).
SJU's 116 points bested Columbia (136), Penn (154), Fordham (235),
Connecticut College (250), Seton Hall (254) and Rider (308). Hofstra
(338), St, Peter's (338), UMass-Norwich (343), St, Bonaventure (437),
and Long Island (455) rounded out the field. CW Post and Molloy
competed, but did not have enough runners to score.
SJU next competes at the Penn State Invitational om Saturday,
September 15.
