Men's Cross Country Team Finishes Third at Mid-Atlantic Regionals
Nov. 14, 2009 Princess Anne, Md. - The Saint Joseph's men's cross country team took third place in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional held at UMES Golf Range/Cross Country Course after taking the Atlantic 10 title two weeks ago. The Hawks finished behind Villanova (48 points) who, along with first place finisher Georgetown (38 points) earned automatic bids to the National Championship. The Hawks top finisher Kevin McDonnell was 19th overall in the race. McDonnell, who took third two weeks ago to lead the Hawks to it's A-10 Championship title, crossed the line at 32:38.7. Last year's NCAA championship participant, Kyle Murray finished less than a minute later in 35th place (33:12.4). Brian Guterl and Jonathan Sclafani completed the course a second within each other in 33:23.3 (39th) and 33:24.4 (41st), respectively. Jimmy Jennings rounded out the top 50 in 47th with a time of 33:35.6 while freshman Jon Mazzio (34:12.0) and George Wittmann (34:25.6) completed all scoring for the Hawks over the ten-kilometer course. The top two teams and the top four runners not on qualifying teams earn spots to Nationals. The Hawks now await the announcements of the at-large selections for the NCAA Championships. The at-large selections will be announced on Monday. The NCAA Championship will be held November 24 in Terre Haute, Indiana, hosted by Indiana State University.
