Guterl and Sclafani Lead Hawks to Seventh Place at A-10s
Nov. 1, 2008
CHARLOTTE, N.C-Without its best runner the Saint Joseph's men's cross country team garnered a seventh place showing at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championships on Saturday. Sophomore Brian Guterl and junior Jonathan Sclafani earned All-Conference honors for the first time. Kyle Murray, SJU's lone All-Atlantic 10 performer from a year ago, was unable to make a go at the race today so Guterl and Sclafani did their best to fill in his place. Guterl crossed the line 12th in a time of 24:34.4. Sclafani was not far behind, coming in 15th with a time of 24:44.3. Graduate student Will Rowland, who took home 2005 All-Conference honors as a sophomore, was 19th in a time of 24:51.3. Jimmy Jennings (39th/25:16.8) and Steve Young (53rd/25:50.6) rounded out the scoring for the Hawks. Justin Heinze (65th) and Kevin McDonnell (68th) completed the varsity seven in 26:10.5 and 26:21.1, respectively. UMass took home the title, narrowly defeating Duquesne by a score of 75-76. Two weeks ago, SJU defeated Duquesne by a single point at the Princeton Invitational. The Hawks will return to Princeton in two weeks when they compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at West Windsor Fields.
