Men's Cross Country Takes Atlantic 10 Title
Oct. 31, 2009
Saint Louis, Mo. - The Men's cross country team won the 2009 Atlantic 10 Cross Country Title, while the women placed seventh in the Atlantic 10 Championships in a muddy Forest Park in Saint Louis, Mo. on Saturday morning. Head Coach Mike Glavin earned the 2009 Cross Country Coach of the Year award after guiding the Hawks to their first A-10 title since 2000. Sophomore Kevin McDonnell lead the way taking second place in 26:13.9, less than a second behind Dayton's first place finisher Chris Lemon who finished in 26:13.3. Right behind McDonnell in 26:40.4 was Kyle Murray for a fifth place finish. Jonathan Sclafani placed 15th (27:17.9) with Jimmy Jennings trailing in 16th (27:18.1), while junior Brian Guterl ran the course with a sore hamstring in 27:20.0. Guterl took 18th place as the fifth finisher in the top 20 for the Hawks. Rounding out the men's scoring was senior George Wittmann in 48th (28:14.2) and freshman Jon Mazzio in 55th (28:20.6). The Hawks totaled 56 points with last year's champion UMass trailing with 67, while Dayton had 70. Three Hawk runners, McDonnell, Murray, and Sclafani, earned All-Conference accolades for finishing in the top 15. "This is something these guys have worked extremely hard for in their four years here," Glavin said. "Every guy has a different story, and three of those guys are seniors who worked extremely hard to get here. The unsung hero today was our fifth finisher, Brian Guterl. He had a hamstring problem and came out here on this muddy course and ran courageously. I am extremely proud of my team."
On the women's side, junior Aimee Chegwidden led the way in 16th in a time of 20:35.5, while Christina Morelli finished soon after in 21st (20:42.2) while Beth Lambright was the third Hawk finisher in 21:19.2. Katie Barrett, Jessica Di Cicco, Marueen O'Donnell, and Kathleen Casey followed each other closely in 50th (21:25.3), 53rd (21:29.5.), 54th (21:29.6), 58th (21:33.4), respectively, to round out the women's scoring. The women finished with 184 points while Dayton took first with 72 and Charlotte was second with 98. The Hawks will return to action in two weeks on November 14, when they compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at UMES in Princess Anne, Md.
