Men's Cross Country Captures Third at Leopard Invitational

Oct. 13, 2007

The SJU men's cross country team posted a solid fourth place (108 points) finish against top competition at the Leopard Invitational Saturday. Junior Kyle Murray led the way with his 8th place finish running the eight-kilometer course in 25:45.0.

The University of Maryland won the meet with 63 points and three-time NCAA Cross Country qualifier American was second with 90 points. La Salle graduate Sean Quigley won the race as an unattached runner in 24:27 while Will Sanders of UConn was the first collegiate finisher running 25:24 to a third place finish.

Although Murray led the way, two youngsters were quite impressive for the Hawks. Freshman Brian Guterl and sophomore Jonathan Sclafani finished 11th and 12th, respectively, running times of 26:14.6 and 26:21.9.

There was a drop off after the top three Hawks as usual scorers, junior Jimmy Jennings and senior co-captain Rich Ryan, rested in preparation for the Atlantic 10 Championship in two weeks.

Sophomore Chris Savino and freshman Luke Fischer concluded the scoring for SJU finishing in 40th and 47th places. Savino completed the course in 27:11.9 and Fischer in 27:21.4

Senior co-captain Will Rowland (27:25.8) made his 2007 cross country debut running in 50th place. Freshman Ryan Fenimore (27:28.7) was the seventh Hawk in 53rd place.

Freshman Jesse Brooks (62nd/27:39.0), junior Steve Young (67th/27:45.4), sophomore George Wittmann (28:20.7), junior Justin Heinze (90th/28:38.2), and freshmen Vince Collins (119th/29:35.5) and Kevin Donnelly (129th/30:20.4) rounded out the Saint Joseph's line up at Lafayette.

The Hawk men will toe the line at the Atlantic 10 Championship at Belmont Plateau in Philadelphia. Saint Joseph's is hosting the meet, with the first race starting at 10:00 a.m.
