Hawk Harriers Take First at Ram Invitational

Sept. 15, 2007

The Saint Joseph's men's cross country claimed first place at the Ram Invitational Saturday. Paced by a trio of harriers that finished in the top four overall, SJU won the men's title with 23 points over second place Columbia (41 points).

Leading the way was junior Kyle Murray who placed second, completing the five-mile Van Courtlandt Park course in 26:12, just two seconds of race winner Ryan Hays of Columbia. In third and fourth places were freshman Brian Guterl (26:48) and Jonathan Sclafani (26:51).

Sophomore Jimmy Jennings backed up his strong performance at Haverford, finishing in sixth place in 27:05. Jennings finished just five seconds ahead of junior Brendan Kearney (8th/27:12) who rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.

Sophomore Chris Savino (27:50) and senior co-captain Rich Ryan (27:56) rounded out the displacing runners finishing 17th and 19th, respectively.

The Ram Invitational also saw the rest of the Hawk roster on Saturday. Freshman Luke Fischer (21st/28:02), junior Pete Dittmar (23rd/28:07), freshman Ryan Fenimore (24th/28:09), and sophomore George Wittmann (25th/28:13) ran just outside of the top seven.

Junior Justin Heinze (28th/28:29), and freshman Jesse Brooks (32nd/28:37) finished in the top half of the field of 69 runners, while junior Stephen Young (43rd/29:44), and freshmen Vince Collins (44th/29:54), and Kevin Donnelly (45th/30:16) completed the SJU contingent.

The race was in run simultaneously with the NYU Invitational. Even though 69 runners were listed in the Ram Invitational, 307 runners completed the race Saturday.

The Hawks will compete at Penn State's Spike Shoe Invitational on Saturday, September 29. Race time is at 10:45 a.m. in State College, Pa.
