Sclafani Helps Hawks to Third Place at Bojangles Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Saint Joseph's men's cross country team placed third at the Bojangles Invitational Saturday at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Jonathan Sclafani was SJU's best finisher with a fifth-place performance. Sclafani completed the eight-kilometer race in 26:22.6, followed by freshman Kevin McDonnell (seventh) in 26:26.7. Sophomore Brian Guterl was thirteen seconds behind McDonnell in eighth place, finishing 26:39.0. SJU's scoring quintet was rounded out by Jimmy Jennings (26:58.2) and Stephen Young (27:49.4) by finishing in 13th and 24th, respectively. The Hawks' final seven runners finished in a pack ranging from 34th to 53rd, which included Ryan Fenimore (28:26.3), David Evans (37th/27:37.0), Luke Fischer (38th/28:40.7), Brendan Kearney (39th/28:41.1), Jesse Brooks (41st/28:49.5), Justin Heinze (43rd/28:50.8), George Johnson (52nd/29:35.2) and George Wittmann (29:37.3).
The meet was a test run for Charlotte, who will be hosting the Atlantic 10 Championship in November. SJU competed at Charlotte without two of its top runners, Kyle Murray (2007 All-Atlantic 10 Cross Country) and Will Rowland (2005 All-Atlantic 10 Cross Country). The Hawks will return to action next week when they travel back to Van Courtlandt Park, which will play host to the Paddy O'Doyle Invitational. RESULTS 1. Charlotte 45 89 total runners |
