Men's Track Wins Three Events, Qualifies for Eight IC4A Events at Penn State National Invitational

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Highlighted by eight IC4A-qualifying performances and wins in the mile, 3000m run, and 4x800m relay inv., the men's track and field team competed at the Penn State National Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

Logan Mohn posted two standout IC4A-qualifying performances on the weekend. The sophomore won the mile in 4.11.47, a new personal record in the event, and then went on to run the first leg of the DMR team comprised of seniors Garrett Barbalinardo, Andrew Townsend, and junior Aaron Leskow that placed second to qualify for IC4As in 9:58.49 - a personal record for the quartet.

Sophomore Paul Szulewski picked up his second 3000m win of the season in an IC4A-qualifying time of 8:22.31 - a new personal record. Szulewski now qualifies for two IC4A events - the mile and 3000m run.

The 4x800m relay inv. team of senior Dave Manion, junior Tommy O'Kane, and sophomores James Gentile and Steven Butenewicz won their event in an IC4A-qualifying 7:38.18.

Junior Jonathan Eisemann qualified for his second IC4A event of the season as he clocked in with a personal-record time of 22.20 in the 200m dash, good for fifth place. Barbalinardo placed second in the 500m dash in an IC4A-qualifying 1:05.07 - a new personal record.

 

 

O'Kane (4:11.73, personal record) and Leskow (4:11.82, personal record) took second and fourth, respectively, in the mile behind Mohn to qualify for IC4As, totaling three Hawks to qualify for the mile event on the day and becoming Leskow's second IC4A event.

Graduate student Kevin McDonnell competed in the "invitational" section of the program, which included top professionals from around the country. McDonnell placed seventh in the 3000m run with a personal-record 8:14.40.

The 4x400m relay team of Eisemann, Roberts, junior Derrick Henry, and sophomore Brendan Robert took ninth in their event with an IC4A-qualifying 3:18.33.

In the middle distance events, Butenewicz clocked in with a time of 1:55.31 in the 800m run while Manion represented the Hawks in the 1000m run with a fifth-place finish (2:30.87). Junior Griff Roberts took sixth place in the 500m dash with a time of 1:05.78.

The Hawks are back in action next weekend as they travel to New Haven, Conn. to compete in Yale's Giegengack Invitational. Start time on Friday, February 1 is set for 5:00 p.m.
