SJU FALLS TO DREXEL AND LEHIGH

BETHLEHEM, PA (2/23/02) -- The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team couldn't hold on as they slipped to both Drexel 4-3 and Lehigh, 6-1, during Saturday afternoon's match. Against Drexel, the match came down to doubles after each team won three singles match-ups. The #1 seeded tandem of Van Homer Pangilinan and Francisco Velazquez were able to beat their Explorers foes 8-2. But it wasn't enough as the #2 and 3 seeds both dropped their matches 8-4. SJU fell to Drexel 4-3. The match against Lehigh began two hours later than expected and did not finish until just before 9:00 pm. Despite the return of senior Shawn Farrokh to the #1 spot, the Hawks mustered just one win over the Mountain Hawks. The lone winner, #2 seed Velazquez, defeated Lehigh's Ty Esler 6-0, 6-3. Hawk men Van Homer Pangilinan and Gary Wnek were able to challenge their Mountain Hawk opponents, pushing them to an 8 point set. It wasn't enough, as they both fell in the second set, 6-0, 6-1 respectively. The Hawks, now 2-6 overall, will compete Sunday, March 3 when they host University of Illinois/Chicago at Swarthmore.
