HAWKS TOP MT. ST. MARY'S BUT LOSE TO SWARTHMORE IN SEASON OPENER

SWARTHMORE, PA (2/11/02) -- The men's tennis team upset Mount Saint Mary's 4-1, but lost a close one to Swarthmore 2-3 during Saturday afternoon's match. Freshman Francisco Velazquez defeated Mountaineer Phil Holliday (6-0, 6-2) and Swarthmore's John Thomas 6-2, 6-3 at the #1 singles slot. #2 seed, Van Homer Pangilinan, defeated Chris Berg (6-3, 6-0) and Tayson Yost (6-3, 6-4), both Velazquez and Pangilinan were the only Hawks to win both matches. Other Hawk performers included wins for Damon Dennin (3-6, 6-2, 7-6), Mark Spyrzynski (6-2, 6-2) and Pat Mulvaney (6-0, 6-2). Dennin and Spyrzynski lost the lone doubles match to Swarthmore foes 7-5, 3-6, 6-2. The Hawks compete Monday, February 11th at St. Peter's.
