Men's Tennis Defeats Dayton, Falls to George Washington at A-10 Championship

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - The Saint Joseph's men's tennis team won its first round match Friday morning over the #9-seeded Dayton Flyers, 4-2, before falling in the quarterfinals to top-seeded George Washington, 4-0. The Hawks will face off with Charlotte in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning. Against the Flyers, the eighth-seeded Hawks won the doubles point to take an early lead. Phil Bayliss and Michael Stauble won the first flight match in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (8), to set the stage for Peter Cognetti and Jeff Kessler to secure the point with a 9-7 win in the second flight. SJU got three singles wins from Bayliss, Kessler, and Matt Prusack to salt away the match while the number-one flight was still being contested. In the afternoon, the Hawks were not as fortunate, falling in a sweep to the Colonials. Bayliss and Stauble lost a hard-fought match at number-one doubles, 8-6, while Cognetti and Kessler fell, 8-5, at number two. SJU and Charlotte will take to the courts at Club 4 Life at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. #8 Saint Joseph's 4, #9 Dayton 2
