Men's Soccer Departs on Last Road Trip of the Regular Season
Nov. 1, 2007
SJU at Saint Louis -- Friday, Nov. 2 at 8:00 p.m. EST SJU at Charlotte -- Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1:00 p.m. EST HEADING WEST AGAIN: The Hawks take their second western road trip of the season to take on the Saint Louis University Billikens on Friday at 8:00 p.m. EST. SJU then travels from Missouri to North Carolina to take on the Charlotte 49ers on Sunday, November 4 at 1:00 p.m. EST. SPLIT DECISION: The Hawks traveled to Ohio last weekend and droped a 4-1 match to Dayton with senior Pat Duddy scoring his fourth goal of the year. Two days later, Saint Joseph's withstood a Xavier onslaught in the first overtime period and cleared the penalty area time and time again. The last time resulted in a long ball over the Musketeer defense to freshman forward Colin Baker who put the ball away for a 1-0 Hawk victory and a 4-1-1 record in the Atlantic 10. SJU stands in second place behind SLU. BATTLE FOR FIRST: Saint Louis is atop the A-10 standings at 5-1-0. Ranked 13th in the nation in the most recent NSCAA/adidas poll, the Billikens look to maintain their winning streak since dropping their match against UMass. SLU is 9-2-3 overall. DOWN SOUTH: Charlotte is 3-2-0 in A-10 play, 9-5-1 overall. Last time out, Charlotte defeated George Washington 3-0. With nine points, Charlotte is tied for the sixth and final A-10 tournament berth with UMass and Dayton. FAST START: The Hawks have raced to a quick and unlikely 3-0-0 record in A-10 play. The Hawks defeated cross-town rival Temple, 1-0 on a Pat Duddy goal, Oct. 13. It was Duddy's first goal at SJU. The Hawks dropped their last out of conference game to Philadelphia U. 3-1, with Duddy supplying the lone goal. Then the Hawks really took the A-10 by surprise defeating George Washington 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 21. In doing so, the Hawks held the top-ranked conference scoring Colonials to their second consecutive one-goal game. Ian Kane provided the game winner with 17 seconds remaining in the game and Duddy scored the equalizer for his third goal in as many games. Two days later, the Hawks created a first by defeating the Richmond Spiders, 1-0. Freshman Colin Baker scored off a Travis Gast free kick in the 85th minute to propel SJU to its first victory over UR in six games (1-5-0). The win also pushed the Hawks to their first 3-0-0 start in A-10 play since 1993. With a UMass loss to Charlotte, Saint Joseph's remained the only undefeated team in the A-10 and were atop the standings with nine points through three games.
SLOW START: Although SJU started strong in conference action, the Hawks struggled to produce results in their non-conference slate. After splitting two games in the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational (L, 6-0 to Furman; W, 3-2 Coastal Carolina), the Hawks dropped their next five games and went a disappointing 1-7-1 in non-conference games. FRESHMAN SENSATION: Colin Baker scored the game winning overtime goal at Xavier Oct. 28, his fifth of the season. Baker earned his second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Award Oct. 22. He scored the game-winning goal against Richmond, his second GWG this season. In the second game of the season against Coastal Carolina, Baker tallied a hat trick in the Hawks' 3-2 victory over the Chanticleers. That performance earned Baker's first A-10 ROW of 2007. Baker's lead Saint Joseph's in scoring (five goals) and points (10 points). UNCOMMON OPPONENTS: Saint Louis and Charlotte are the newest members of the A-10, and SJU hasn't fared too well against the Billikens or the 49ers. Last time in Missouri, the Hawks lost 8-0 in 2005 and are 0-3 all-time versus Saint Louis. Last year Charlotte defeated the Hawks in Philadelphia 6-1. Sunday's meeting is only the second in the all-time series. |
