SJU Men's Soccer Travels to Ohio
Oct. 24, 2007
The SJU men's soccer team puts their perfect 3-0-0 record on the line Friday at Dayton. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Gametracker and free live video streaming will be available for the game vs. the Flyers. Click on the Gametracker link in the men's soccer page and go to Dayton Flyers Men's Soccer for the live streaming. Gametracker will also be available for the Xavier game on Sunday at 1:00p.m. HEADING WEST: The Hawks take their first western road trip of the season to take on the University of Dayton and Xavier University. The Dayton game is Oct. 26, 7:00 p.m. at Bajuan Field, site of the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The Xavier game is at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 28. Dayton and Xavier have gotten off to slow starts in the A-10 with matching 1-3-0 records. FAST START: The Hawks have raced to a quick and unlikely 3-0-0 record in A-10 play. The Hawks defeated cross-town rival Temple, 1-0 on a Pat Duddy goal, Oct. 13. It was Duddy's first goal at SJU. The Hawks dropped their last out of conference game to Philadelphia U. 3-1, with Duddy supplying the lone goal. Then the Hawks really took the A-10 by surprise defeating George Washington 2-1 in double overtime on Oct. 21. In doing so, the Hawks held the top-ranked conference scoring Colonials to their second consecutive one-goal game. Ian Kane provided the game winner with 17 seconds remaining in the game and Duddy scored the equalizer for his third goal in as many games. Two days later, the Hawks created a first by defeating the Richmond Spiders, 1-0. Freshman Colin Baker scored off a Travis Gast free kick in the 85th minute to propel SJU to its first victory over UR in six games (1-5-0). The win also pushed the Hawks to their first 3-0-0 start in A-10 play since 1993. With a UMass loss to Charlotte, Saint Joseph's remains the only undefeated team in the A-10 and are atop the standings with nine points through three games.
SLOW START: Although SJU started strong in conference action, the Hawks struggled to produce results in their non-conference slate. After splitting two games in the Coastal Carolina/adidas Invitational (L, 6-0 to Furman; W, 3-2 Coastal Carolina), the Hawks dropped their next five games and went a disappointing 1-7-1 in non-conference games. FRESHMAN SENSATION: Colin Baker earned his second Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week Award Oct. 22. He scored the game-winning goal against Richmond, his second GWG this season. In the second game of the season against Coastal Carolina, Baker tallied a hat trick in the Hawks' 3-2 victory over the Chanticleers. That performance earned Baker's first A-10 ROW of 2007. Baker's lead Saint Joseph's in scoring (four goals) and points (eight points). PAST IN OHIO: Due to the rotation of scheduling in the A-10 (14 teams only play nine games apiece) the Hawks didn't face the Flyers or the Musketeers. SJU has a 1-9-1 record against Dayton. The Hawks last defeated the Flyers 2-0 on Sept. 22, 1995 and tied them 2-2 (2OT) exactly five years ago on Oct. 26, 2001 in Philadelphia. Saint Joseph's is 3-8-0 against Xavier, last winning in Cincinnati, 2-1 on Oct. 6, 1996. LOOKING WEST AGAIN: After the Ohio road trip, things don't get easier for the Hawks. SJU travels to #15 Saint Louis on Friday, Nov. 2 at historic Hermann Stadium. Then they have a quick turnaround traveling to Charlotte to take on the 49ers on Sunday, Nov. 4 at Transamerica Field. The Billikens are 3-1-0 in A-10 play this season and have already earned positive results against other nationally ranked foes (T, 1-1 vs. #8-SMU; W, 2-1 vs. #2-Indiana), while the Charlotte defeated UMass to bolster its record to 1-2-1 in the A-10. |
