UMASS DEFEATS MEN'S SOCCER, 5-0

AMHERST, MASS. (11/2/03) - Five different players tallied first-half goals to help Massachusetts cruise to a 5-0 victory over Saint Joseph’s at Rudd Field. UMass improves to 11-6-1 overall , 5-4-1 in the Atlantic 10, while keeping the Minutemen in contention for the fifth playoff spot for the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament. Saint Joseph’s falls to 7-10-1, and 4-5-1 in the league. UMass started the scoring early, at 10:45, when freshman Ralph Pace knocked in shot to the upper right corner, with assists from Oral Bullen and Rob Charest. Then at 15:12, Andrew Eicher scored off the pass from Smith Utubor. In another 10 minutes, the home team was up 3-0, with the goal from Dan Cowell. Ernie Billittier and Michael Donnelly finished the scoring with a pair of goals just over two minutes apart late in the first half. UMass took 22 shots in the first half alone, while limiting the Hawks to just three. The Minutemen finished the game with a resounding 37-8 margin in shots. Nick Billman made three saves to earn the shutout. Hawks’ keeper Kevin Dougher (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) made 11 saves in 80 minutes of action while reserve Chris DeStefano (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Twp.) made one in the final 10 minutes of the match. The Hawks take a break from A-10 play with a Soccer Seven matchup at Penn on Wednesday, Nov. 5. SJU hosts Temple next Saturday, Nov. 8 for Senior Night at Finnesey Field.
