FIRST HALF FIREWORKS POWER SJU PAST FORDHAM IN MEN'S SOCCER, 3-1
PHILADELPHIA (10/12/03) - Despite surrendering a goal just 13 seconds into the contest, Saint Joseph's (6-6, 3-1 A-10) regrouped and exploded for three first half goals to defeat Fordham (2-7-1, 1-3 A-10) in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action on Finnesey Field, 3-1.
A high-scoring first half, Fordham stunned the Hawks in the opening minute, as sophomore Geoffrey Wolyniec took the opening kickoff and marched uncontested on toward goal. He then rifled a shot that SJU goalkeeper Kevin Dougher stopped, but Ram freshman Patrick McNamee knocked the rebound into the open net to give FU the lead just 13 seconds into the contest.
St. Joe's responded quickly tallying the tying goal just over a minute later. Freshman Andrew Takats banged home the equalizer off an assist from senior Tom Brislin at the 1:15 mark.
Takats was in the middle of it again 10 minutes later, as he headed a pass into the Fordham box where sophomore Scott Cunningham headed the ball over Ram goalkeeper Nate Freihaut to give SJU the lead for good in the 14th minute.
The Crimson and Gray closed out the scoring in the 33rd minute when senior Andrew Kulinski slipped a shot just inside the far post to make it a 3-1 contest. Kulinski had entered the game as a substitute less than 15 seconds earlier.
A fairly evenly played match, both teams had additional opportunities to score but sent shots high, wide and off of the post.
Fordham outshot SJU for the game 11-10 and also held a slim edge in corner kicks 4-3. SJU committed four fouls to 14 by the Rams.
Dougher made four saves in goal for the Hawks. Friehaut made one save in the opening half and was replaced by Stephen Faber in the second stanza.
A critical two-game road trip is up next for SJU, as the Hawks travel to Duquesne and St. Bonaventure next weekend.
