HAWKS HOLD OFF LA SALLE, 1-0, IN MEN'S SOCCER

PHILADELPHIA (10/10/03) Matt James (Skippack, Pa./Perkiomen Valley H.S.) scored the lone goal of the match and Saint Joseph's held off tremendous pressure by La Salle in the second half, as the Hawks scored a 1-0 decision in the Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Soccer Seven match at Finnesey Field. Saint Joseph's improves to 5-6 (2-1 A-10; 1-3 Soccer Seven) while La Salle drops to 3-5-3 (1-2 A-10; 0-1-2 Soccer Seven). Senior goalkeeper Kevin Dougher (Blue Bell, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) made four saves to record his third shutout of the year for the Hawks. James, a senior forward, tallied the gamewinner at 8:15, for his second goal of the season. Classmate Andrew Kulinski (Turnersville, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) set up the goal as he took a shot, which was saved by La Salle's Stash Graham. Kulinski then collected the rebound and sent it to a breaking James, who converted from close range. With the assist, Kulinski notches the 20th of his career and ties the SJU all-time career record, shared by John McIntyre (1991-93) and Don D'Ambra (1990-93). The tempo of the game changed dramatically in the second half as the Explorers dominated play in their offensive end and had possession for most of the period. La Salle took six shots in the half to five for Saint Joseph's. The Explorers could not convert, however, and one of their last opportunities came with 5:30 remaining, but Scott Golden's shot was high. Graham, who was very active in pushing La Salle forward offensively throughout the second half, made a key save with nine minutes to play. SJU's James took a shot from 40 yards out on the left sideline with Graham out of position, but the keeper was able to make the stop. He finished the game with four saves. La Salle outshot the Hawks, 13-10, in the contest. Saint Joseph's hosts Fordham in an A-10 match on Sunday at Finnesey Field at 1 p.m.
